Difference between Global & Local Repository in Datawarehouse

Global Repository :
Domain can contain one global repository. The global repository can contain common objects to be shared throughout the domain through global shortcuts.Once created, you cannot change a global repository to a local repository. You can promote an existing local repository to a global repository.

Local Repository :
Each local repository in the domain can connect to the global repository and use objects in its shared folders. A folder in a local repository can be copied to other local repositories while keeping all local and global shortcuts intact.

PARAMETERS & VARIABLES

A mapping parameter is a user definable constant that takes up a value before running a session. It can be used in SQ expressions, Expression transformation etc.
  • Define the parameter in the mapping designer - parameter & variable.
  • Use the parameter in the Expressions.
  • Define the values for the parameter in the parameter file.
A mapping variable is also defined similar to the parameter except that the value of the variable is subjected to change. It picks up the value in the following order.
  • From the Session parameter file.
  • As stored in the repository object in the previous run.
  • As defined in the initial values in the designer.
  • Default values

Difference between OLAP & OLTP

OLAP stands for Online Analytical Processing.

It uses database tables (fact and dimension tables) to enable multidimensional viewing, analysis and querying of large amounts of data. E.g. OLAP technology could provide management with fast answers to complex queries on their operational data or enable them to analyze their company's historical data for trends and patterns.

OLTP stands for Online Transaction Processing.

OLTP uses normalized tables to quickly record large amounts of transactions while making sure that these updates of data occur in as few places as possible. Consequently OLTP database are designed for recording the daily operations and transactions of a business. E.g. a timecard system that supports a large production environment must record successfully a large number of updates during critical periods like lunch hour, breaks, startup and close of work.
