ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF UNIX

UNIX computer operating system (A command Line based OS) was developed in early 1970’s at Bell Laboratories in the USA.
Because of the High reliability, scalability and powerful features UNIX remains as popular operating system. Some of big companies like Sun Microsystems, Apple Inc., Hewlett-Packard and AT&T, which is the original (parent company) uses UNIX. 

Depending on the kind of use of UNIX  has both Advantages and Disadvantages. Talking about the Advantages:

VIRTUAL MEMORY USAGE

Virtual memory is a method of extending the available physical memory or RAM on a computer. UNIX uses its virtual memory efficiently. In UNIX user can run many programs at a time without using most of its physical memory. Also number of users can have account on one machine and even use it simultaneously. Thus UNIX is a multiprocessing, multi-user system.

PORTABILITY

UNIX is portable operating system which means that it can be installed on different hardware platforms. It can be run on both PC and Macintosh computers and many other computing machines.

INPUT OUTPUT OPERATIONS

I/O Operations are more simplified in UNIX. It uses a hierarchical file system that allows trouble-free maintenance and efficient implementation. Everything in UNIX is file or a process

SECURITY

UNIX has built-in security and permissions features thus giving a solid user security. UNIX assigns permissions to the UID and GID of user, based on which the accesses to the files are controlled.

Finally ,UNIX has collection of utilities and commands which can be customized to execute complex tasks, and there are no insignificant utilities or commands in UNIX.

DISADVANTAGES OF UNIX

UNIX OS being command line based makes it difficult for beginners to understand and more easy for the programmers. Also some UNIX utilities can prove disastrous if not used correctly
